During the three and half weeks that the Vietcong held the city they massacred over 2,500 civilians as a ‘blood debt’ for fighting against the VC. The USA and the South Vietnamese responded by battering the city with bombs and artillery and dropping napalm on the Imperial Palace. Today, there is little left of it – just the outlines of where buildings used to be. By the end of the offensive, about 10,000 people had died in Hue, most of them civilians.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/trav7-12.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Trav7-12</image:title></image:image><lastmod>2014-03-16T09:38:08+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/2014/02/13/remnants-of-a-war-fought-in-vietnam/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/trav6-11.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Trav6-11</image:title><image:caption>With great coffee too.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/trav6-10.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Trav6-10</image:title><image:caption>The Vietnam war: now it's cool, like Che Guevara and Communist propaganda posters.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/trav6-9.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Trav6-9</image:title><image:caption>The youth of today.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/trav6-8.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Trav6-8</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/trav6-7.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Trav6-7</image:title><image:caption>The bunker in the Independence Palace is full of echoing hallways. We soaked it all up.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/trav4-5.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Trav4-5</image:title><image:caption>Yes, its true, I have become one of those people who insists on taking a picture of their food before they eat it,. We could have done with some of that local knowledge, because we spent the whole morning completely underwhelmed by the Golden Gate Bridge. "It's supposed to be orange," I whined at my wife, "I'm sure that it's supposed to be orange. It is in all the films. Why is it blue?" As we snapped more pictures of the underwhelming bridge she breezily reassured me that the light reflecting off the water made it look blue. I nearly tweeted some witticism about how the GGB was the wrong colour Thank God I didn't, because then I would have looked like an IDIOT.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/ca4-2.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Hanging Around</image:title><image:caption>A lot of people seem to hang from the sides of street cars, certainly more than you would ever imagine could safely fit there. In fact, this particular bum-saver was actually one of many distributed in the Olympic park during the 2012 Olympics. We never even had it in Devon. So how can it be the object of my post for Devon, you ask? Well, it was raining in Devon, there were lots of flags and, more importantly, the Jubilee weekend and the Olympics have come to be the same thing in the popular consciousness, eliding the gap in time between the two events. See my helpful chart below, which explains this phenomenon. </image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2014-04-18T03:21:59+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/2013/01/02/travels-in-2012-part-1-of-4-an-orange-in-the-alpuljarras/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/orange20.jpg</image:loc><image:title>orange20</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/orange19.jpg</image:loc><image:title>orange19</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/orange18.jpg</image:loc><image:title>orange18</image:title><image:caption>Don't worry, if you didn't drop any oranges then it's ok, you didn't look that stupid. The older the better. But when does it become ok to take photos of a gravestone? This graveyard was unusual in that it had some very old (1700s) gravestones and some very recent (2012) gravestones. As we entered the cemetery we exchanged pleasantries with a couple who had obviously just been to visit a grave. It's not ok to take pictures of those graves. The basic graveyard rule of thumb, which I would commend to any budding cemetery snappers, is: if the headstone is still shiny, don't photograph it.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/pen10.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Sowerby Church</image:title><image:caption>Look, those who have read this blog in the past might think that I make a habit of visiting graveyards to take pictures, but this was just a coincidence, ok?</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/pen9.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Locked Gate</image:title><image:caption>Ok, so this gate was locked and we DID have to climb over it, but the map told us that it was a perfectly legitimate right of way...</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/pen8.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Aggressive Sheep</image:title><image:caption>It became clear to me why the gate was locked when these sheep began chasing us. He was lapped twice by all the other competitors in the men's T46 1500m race, and finished in 11m 23s - nearly seven minutes slower than his nearest competitor. At the end, he was the only man left running - or doing any kind of sport - in the Olympic arena, as 80,000 people got to their feet and cheered him on. At times it felt like he'd pack it all in (he was suffering from a foot injury, as it turns out), but he was there to the bitter end. “I thought of stopping,” he said afterwards. “But I kept going because I wanted to finish.” By far and away my best experience of either the Olympics or Paralympics.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/010.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Silhouettes</image:title><image:caption>Some were more interested in the running than others.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/o8.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Conker on path</image:title><image:caption>Don't be fooled by that sunshine. How will people know that I was here? I thought to myself. I can't just see it with my own eyes! I hurriedly tried to delete photos. As it turns out, this takes longer than it takes Richard Whitehead to run 200m. Consequently, I actually missed him crossing the finish line. But I understand that it was very impressive.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/o4.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Madeville at the Games</image:title><image:caption>This is my photo and I was there. We'd been to the Olympic Park, of course, but hadn't got tickets for the Stadium and utterly failed to get any tickets for the Paralympics. So receiving a phonecall from friends offering us two unwanted tickets to see athletics in the Stadium on a Saturday morning is in the same category as seeing people you know on the tube: impossible until it happens to you.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/o3.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Westcombe News</image:title><image:caption>Even the Westcombe News ("Free to 3800 homes, and in libraries &amp; some shops") my local community newspaper and the home of rampant nimbyism, picked up the prevailing wind and realised that to come out openly against the Games would have resulted in their offices (if they had any) being stormed and the editorial staff (volunteers) being lynched in Greenwich Park. Still, as headlines go about the greatest sporting event that this nation has ever seen, "Was it worth it?" is hardly the unambiguous headline of unwavering support one might have expected. Especially when a load of the events are - literally - happening in your back yard. I mean come on people, it was the Olympics and it was happening not five minutes from your house. In the article the WN hedges its bets by beginning with a load of quotes from random people saying how amazing it had all been (including one from Sandra Barnes "writing from Philadelphia in the US" - you ran out of people in the area to say positive things and you had to go across the Atlantic to find someone else?), then moves on to talk about the impact on local businesses (bad), the stationing of Rapier surface to air missiles near Greenwich Park (unforgivable, but "at least locals did not have them placed on their roofs") and then transport: "the surges of passenger numbers on the tube and the railways were better managed than predicted [i.e. we thought we'd all be plunged back into the dark ages]: but many drivers, defeated by traffic jams, simply gave up any attempt to get to where they needed to be [i.e. I couldn't drive to Sainsbury's because of the one way system, so I gave up and came home]. They end with the standard disclaimer which now by law must be added when criticising any aspect of the Olympics: "Overall, most people agree that the games were a spectacular success." This is journalistic gold and I LOVE the WN.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2012-09-16T15:41:43+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/2012/09/02/grave-intentions-or-how-i-didnt-meet-the-pope-in-twickenham/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/pope17.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Rainwater on graves</image:title><image:caption>Is that the sky reflected in the rainwater, or my own growing sense of futility?</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/pope16.jpg</image:loc><image:title>The rain comes down</image:title><image:caption>As I sheltered under the eaves of the church, I realised that actually, yes, I could think of several better places to be during a thunderstorm. In South East London, the Thames is big enough to sail an aircraft carrier down it. I've seen cruise ships moored off Greenwich, before. In Twickenham, the Thames is a pleasant river to stroll along, possibly stopping at a pub for some Eel Pie and a real ale, before taking out the rowboat for a bit of a paddle.</image:caption></image:image><lastmod>2013-03-11T09:15:28+00:00</lastmod><changefreq>monthly</changefreq></url><url><loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/2012/08/21/bring-me-sunshine-morecambe-lancaster/</loc><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/lancs131.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Lancaster flowers</image:title><image:caption>This is probably what Lancaster would look like if you were on LSD.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/img_20120820_213251.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Head Poker</image:title><image:caption>There really are rules to this game.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/lancs28.jpg</image:loc><image:title>End of the Line - Virgin Trains</image:title><image:caption>Virgin Trains announced last week that they were unsuccessful in their bid to renew their 15 year right to manage the West Coast mainline. Strangely, I found myself feeling a little sad at this fact. So many hours of my life have been spent stuck in the middle of nowhere on their red seats. Also, they were the first train company to give us those toilets with the slowly revolving doors that someone inevitably forgets to lock and you push the button for them to open, and then the two of you must stand/sit there in mutual embarrassment as you watch them slowly appear and disappear, them observing you from the comfort of the toilet seat. Goodbye, Virgin Trains.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/lancs27.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Lancaster rain</image:title><image:caption>That's real Northern water, right there. A wonderful building that is home to the Lancaster LitFest and various creative businesses. Also, coincidentally, where our wedding reception will be held. Last week the company which owns the venue went into liquidation, and the council has withdrawn funding for the building. Our intelligence gathering was compromised by Beckie loudly talking about how we were going to get married there in front of the bar maid. She was not very forthcoming with intelligence, beyond "we might not be here in a month." Great. Do you know how many hours of my life I spent going around wedding venues? Do you? I travelled the country to find this place.... Then Beckie gently peeled my fingers off of the bar maid's collar and made me put her down. Afterwards, I sat in a darkened room to calm down.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://elsewhereunderwritten.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/lancs17.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Storey dress</image:title><image:caption>This dress is made entirely of books.
